Research Fellow in Biophotonics

    Location: Highfield Campus
    Salary: £28,695 to £35,256
    Full Time Fixed Term
Closing Date: Sunday 22 March 2015
    Interview Date: To be confirmed
    Reference: 522815P2

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position in Biophotonics to join the group of Dr Sumeet Mahajan to work under a newly funded ERC project “Next Generation Label-free Chemical Nanoscopy for Biomedical Applications.”

The successful applicant for this position will have a PhD (or equivalent) in bio-photonics or bio-optics or a related field. We are seeking a highly motivated experimental researcher to develop the techniques of coherent Raman scattering and related non-linear techniques for biomedical imaging applications. The candidate should have a strong background in optics with experience of working with fs/ps lasers, designing and setting up optical rigs, interfacing hardware and microscopy. Some exposure to handling biological materials and cells is desirable. The applicant will work in a completely interdisciplinary environment involving biologists, chemists and medics and therefore should have the ability to interact and exchange ideas at all levels.

The appointee will be responsible for setting up non-linear optical microscopes and for developing strategies to increase their spatial resolution in imaging. The work will, therefore, involve developing new approaches to imaging with a host of non-linear chemically selective microscopic techniques improving on their current limitations and also performing imaging experiments on biomedical samples supporting wide-ranging existing collaborations. Applicants should therefore have a strong aptitude not only for the development of the physical techniques but also their biomedical applications. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, the ability to keep clear records and to work independently as part of a dynamic and interdisciplinary team. Experience with MATLAB is essential, familiarity with open source microscope management and scanning software such as MicroManager and Scanimage will be an added advantage. A proven track record of scientific publications and presentations at international research meetings is also highly desirable.

The post will be tenable from 1st April 2015: date of start will be negotiable.

The University has a generous maternity policy, onsite childcare facilities and employees are able to participate in the childcare vouchers scheme.

The University recognises that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit in with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. We would, therefore, consider requests to undertake this role on a part-time or a flexible working basis. Due consideration will also be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness.

    Application Procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The vacancy will close at midnight on the closing date as shown above.
